Waves exist independently, regardless of the presence of other waves. However,
if waves do co-exist, they may interfere with each other. If the waves are mostly in phase with each other, they add or constructively interfere with each other. If the waves are out of phase, they destructively interfere with each other. This combining of waves is known as the principle of superposition.
